Year 6 Educational Trip

Year 6 Educational Trip

Visit to Rodrigues - 2026

The Year 6 educational trip to Rodrigues was a truly enriching and memorable experience that allowed learners to immerse themselves in the island’s unique culture, environment, and traditions through meaningful hands-on learning opportunities. From the moment they arrived safely on the island, students embraced every experience with enthusiasm, curiosity, and open-mindedness.

Throughout the trip, students demonstrated the IB Learner Profile attributes of being open-minded and caring as they explored the rich cultural heritage of Rodrigues through traditional dance workshops and Pandanus weaving sessions. Working directly with local artisans, they learned about sustainable practices, craftsmanship, and the importance of preserving cultural traditions. These experiences helped students develop a deeper appreciation for different perspectives, cultures, and ways of life.

The visit to the François Leguat Reserve provided valuable opportunities for inquiry-based and experiential learning. Learners participated in activities such as caring for baby tortoises, creating scientific herbariums, planting endemic seedlings, removing invasive species, and designing awareness posters about conservation. Through these experiences, students developed a greater understanding of environmental stewardship and sustainability while applying their research, thinking, and collaboration skills in authentic contexts.

The trip also provided students with meaningful opportunities for service and community engagement. During their environmental awareness session and beach clean-up activity with Shoals Rodrigues, students investigated the impact of microplastics on marine ecosystems and reflected on how their actions can positively contribute to protecting the environment and supporting their communities. At the Port Mathurin market, students experienced the vibrant local culture while interacting confidently with vendors and discovering local products and crafts.

Creativity and self-expression were equally celebrated throughout the journey. Inspired by the breathtaking landscapes of Trou d’Argent, students participated in art and poetry workshops that encouraged reflection, creativity, and appreciation for the natural beauty of Rodrigues.

Beyond the educational activities, the trip offered many opportunities for students to strengthen important Approaches to Learning skills, including collaboration, communication, self-management, research, and critical thinking. Whether adapting to new experiences, solving problems together, or supporting one another throughout the journey, students demonstrated resilience, independence, and teamwork.

The Rodrigues trip was a memorable learning journey that encouraged students to inquire, reflect, take action, and grow as internationally minded learners while creating lasting friendships and unforgettable memories together.
